6 Steps to designing a great website

With everyone become more tech savy, people are using the Internet to find out information before picking up the phone or going to meet people in person. By having a website, this allows people to get a first impression of your club and an insight into what they may expect once they join.

When designing your website there are some key elements to having a great website:

  1. Put yourself in the visitors shoes
    Pretend you are coming to the club for the first time, what are some of the key things that you would look for? This questions is important to make sure you build a website that will attract new members.

  2. Make it easy to navigate
    Too many websites make it too difficult to find the key information that people are looking for quickly and easily. You may have website that looks great, but it is too hard to find information and this generally means that people will go to a different website, rather than staying on your website. This could even mean that they join a different club.
    * Menu and sub menus are clear
    * Categories and sub categories can be easily navigated
    * Formatting makes it clear to see what the most important information is on the page

  3. Professional looking
    As with all clubs, money is an issue, although this should not prevent you from having a professional looking website. First impressions go a long away in the style and presentation of a website. If your website looks professional and slick in appearance, people will more likely stay on your site to find out more information.

  4. Key pages to include
    For all websites, there are some key pages to include on your site. These are
    * Contact us: This provide all your clubs contact details for new and potential members to contact you
    * About us: Have a one page overview about your club which may include number of members, recent achievements
    * Upcoming events: This is a great marketing opportunity to promote upcoming events to new, prospective and existing members that also assists in growing your club culture
    * Sitemap: This helps with your Googe listing
    * Privacy/security page: Safeguard your club by having a security/privacy policy

  5. Include meta keywords and meta description in the coding
    When designing the website with your web developer, it is important to ensure that you will have meta keywords and meta descriptions included in each page of your code. This will assist in search engines listing your site on search results
  6. Text/fonts
    The font used on your site is important. Arial is most commonly used and is easy on the eye to navigate.
