15/11/2008 - YOUNG ACHIEVERS RECOGNIZED WITH GOLD DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARDS

NSW Sport and Recreation Minister Kevin Greene hailed the latest Duke of Edinburgh's Award Gold recipients as truly outstanding young Australians.

92 young people were presented with their Awards by NSW Governor, Professor Marie Bashir AC CVO at a special ceremony at Government House today.

"I think it's fair to say in congratulating these young adventurers today that their achievements place them in a class of their own," Mr Greene said.

"The Duke of Edinburgh's Gold Award is the highest level of this internationally renowned personal development program.

"In winning this award, 92 dedicated young men and women have shown strength of character, leadership and an ability to persevere when circumstances get tough.

"To gain a Gold Award demonstrates a commitment to community service that should be recognised and congratulated."

Mr Greene said the award, first established in Britain in 1956, has seen thousands of young Australians aged 14 to 25 actively contribute to community life.

Gold awardees spend at least 12 months volunteering for a community organisation such as the Red Cross, Surf Live Saving, or Meals on Wheels.

They must undertake an adventurous journey like bush walking or a canoeing expedition.

They must also acquire a personal skill, such as a musical instrument or foreign language and participate in physical recreation like sport or dancing.

Lastly, they must complete a residential project, such as attending a sports tour, a church camp or a community project.

"I congratulate the Gold awardees on their fine service to the community and wish them the very best for the future," Mr Greene said.

"It is always inspiring to see young people set themselves a challenging goal and work hard to achieve it and they should all be very proud of their accomplishments."
