13/11/2008 - NSW GOVERNMENT WORKS WITH LOCAL SPORTING GROUPS
More than 80 State-level sporting organisations this morning attended a breakfast forum organised by the NSW Government to discuss the future of their industry.NSW Sport and Recreation Minister Kevin Greene addressed the forum, held in Sydney Olympic Park, in an open and plain-English manner to provide direction and priorities for the sector.
"Our key priority today was building a closer partnership with members of the NSW sporting industry and community and I'm encouraged that's happening," Mr Greene said.
"The NSW Government is committed to working closely with state sporting associations to ensure NSW can continue to build on the many health and social benefits that sport provides.
"It is well known that regular physical activity can reduce the risk of a range of chronic diseases including obesity, diabetes, cardio-vascular disease and some cancers.
"It is estimated that physical inactivity contributes to the nation's cost burden of disease by some seven percent.
"I want to make it easier for residents of NSW to access the facilities and opportunities they need to be physically active, because I genuinely believe this will also lead to happier and more harmonious communities," he said.
Mr Greene said there was a growing body of evidence showing people who participate in sports clubs and organised recreational activities enjoy greater mental health and are more alert and resilient against the stresses of living in a modern society.
"I've personally seen the contribution sporting associations can make to community life in my role as President of the St George District Cricket Association and through participation in the sporting teams of my children.
"By working together, the Government and state sporting organisations can build on the ability that sport and recreation has to make a positive impact in this state.
"That's why we hold forums like the one today in Sydney Olympic Park working together better helps us continue to increase the benefits that sport brings to our community.
