20/02/2009 - SPORTS STARS BREAKFAST RAISES FUNDS FOR CHARITY
NSW Sport Minister Kevin Greene today hosted the third Westpac Charity Sports Stars Breakfast at Hurstville Oval where all proceeds from the event go to local charities.Mr Greene said the event raised close to $50,000 for disadvantaged people over the last two years and hoped to raise more than $10,000 this year.
"This is a great example of a local grassroots community organisation, the Lugarno Lions, pulling together to help people in need," Mr Greene said.
"The first event in 2007 raised $33,000 to help people suffering from floods in Tamworth, while last year $10,000 was raised to buy two local cerebral palsy new Hart walkers."
Mr Greene said the day, hosted by popular radio voice Glenn Wheeler, included local sports stars like Ken Rosewall, Wayne Riley, Graham Langlands and Steve Edge.
"Money raised this year will be donated to four local organisations specialising in helping children with disabilities," he said.
"Peakhurst High School facilitates ease of entry for children with disabilities and the money raised should be enough to help them purchase a special travel bus.
"Carinya School desperately needs more interactive white boards and the Pole Depot needs sports equipment like modifications to wheel chairs so young adults with disabilities can participate in team games like bowls and cricket.
"Learning Links needs monitoring equipment for children who are difficult to control and a special hammock and ball pit with protective walls for children with severe sensory issues."
He said it was important to note the generosity of the community today, from major sponsor Westpac and their $2,500 donation to many local clubs, hotels and businesses.
Those who helped include Punchbowl Bus Company, St George Taxis, Energy Australia, Warren Saunders Insurance Brokers, St George Masonic club, St George Illawarra Dragons, Mortdale Hotel, Mortdale RSL and of course Hurstville Council. Catering equipment has been supplied free of charge by Illawarra Catholic Club/Club Menai.
Special thanks go to the Lugarno Lions club and celebrity chefs Leo and Merren Rutishauser from Stapletons Restaurant, as well as The Markets Lions Club of Flemington that provide the food free each year.
"This is a great day for a great cause and I'm thankful to all for their help," Mr Greene said.
