19/02/2009 MERLINO CHIPS IN TO LAUNCH NEW WOMEN'S GOLF WEBSITE
Women’s golf fans around the world can now access the latest player and tour information on a new golfing website launched by Sports Minister James Merlino today. At Croydon Golf Club for the Victorian 72 Hole Strokeplay Championships, Mr Merlino said the new website was launched thanks to a $35,000 Brumby Government funding boost.
“This fantastic new website will keep golfers and fans up to speed with all the latest developments in women’s golf right across Victoria and Australia,” Mr Merlino said.
“It includes news stories and real-time updates on all amateur tournaments where crucial player ranking points are up for grabs.
“Most importantly women and girls of all abilities interested in playing golf can now tap into information on where to get started and see playing opportunities throughout the country.”
Mr Merlino said the new website was funded as part of the Victorian Government’s $4.14 million State Sporting Association Support Grant program.
“More than 70 sporting associations have been funded through the program, which encourages sporting bodies to create new ways for people to get involved in a range of sports,” he said.
“By providing the financial support for associations to develop new initiatives like the WGV website, we’re also providing the resources for clubs to gain more members and volunteers, and improve the way they promote local tournaments and encourage local interest in the game.
“Golf clubs are a great way of getting and keeping more people healthy and active, not just on the greens – but actively involved in club life too.
“By encouraging involvement in exercise we can improve levels of physical activity to enhance a person’s overall health and wellbeing, which is what Go for your life is all about.
“These up and coming amateur golfers will really benefit from the new site and can now tap into their latest ranking points, investigate scholarship and development opportunities, and check on the progress of their colleagues and competitors to keep one step ahead of the competition.
“There’s no doubt the new WGV website resource will become an increasingly valuable tool for golfers of all levels.”
Mr Merlino said golf enthusiasts can keep up to speed with all the latest golf news and opportunities available online by visiting www.womensgolf.org.au
