19/02/2009 - $1000 TO HELP SARAH CONTINUE HER SPORTING DREAMS

A talented local junior bowler from Cameron Park today received a financial boost that will help her build her already considerable abilities.

Sport and Recreation Minister and local MP Kerry Hickey today visited 17 year old Sarah Vesenjak to present her with a NSW Government cheque for $1000.

"One of the great things I can do as the Minister for Sport is to meet with great young athletes like Sarah and provide them with some assistance that helps them achieve their sporting dreams," Mr Greene said.

"A member of the Cardiff Women's Bowling Club, Sarah is a 17 year old who has already achieved at an outstanding level of performance at a very young age.

"She is one of just 12 girls selected for the 2009 NSW Under-18 State Squad and just last month she helped NSW defeat Victoria at the Clayton Bowls Club in Melbourne.

"This $1000 is to help her travel to interstate competitions so she can continue to build her sporting experience," Mr Greene said.

Cessnock MP Kerry Hickey said the money was especially helpful because it will help a young regional athlete compete in competitions she may not be able to make otherwise.

"Travelling to interstate competitions can pose a hefty financial burden for young athletes," Mr Hickey said.

"This is especially true for athletes from regional areas and that's why this $1000 will help Sarah attend bowls tournaments around the country.

Mr Greene said the NSW Government is proud to invest in young athletes from all sporting backgrounds.

"After all, it's important to remember today's juniors will be tomorrow's champions.

"I wish Sarah the very best of luck for her upcoming tournaments and I have no doubt she'll prove a great success both on and off the green," he said.
