07/12/2008 - SASI mourns passing of Football coach

The SA Sports Institute (SASI) and SA football community is shocked and deeply saddened by the passing of Martyn Crook in Los Angeles.

Martyn was on national coaching duties with the Qantas Joeys, preparing for the three match Nike International Friendlies between Australia, Brazil and the USA.

SASI Director Wes Battams said Martyn had been the SASI Men's Football coach for the past 14 years, during which time he had done a fantastic job at state and national levels.

"Martyn played a critical leadership role contributing to the development of individual players, SASI, state and national teams as well as to the overall development of talent pathways and coaching within the sport," Mr Battams said.

A former Socceroo and West Adelaide goalkeeper, Martyn was a 2006 FFSA Hall of Fame Inductee. He has been a lifetime contributor to the game as a player, coach and coach educator.

"Martyn was a passionate and dedicated coach and servant of the game," Mr Battams said.

"He was highly regarded at SASI by all staff and his coaching colleagues and will be sadly missed. He has left a lasting and positive legacy on the development of literally thousands of young football players in the state.

"We are indebted to the FFA for the support and assistance they are providing to the Joeys and Martyn's family during this difficult time. Our deepest sympathy is extended to Martyn's wife Julie and young son Joseph, his parents and two elder sons."
