02/12/2008 - SCHOOL HOLIDAY ACTIVITIES ON THE NORTH COAST

Sport and Recreation Minister Kevin Greene is encouraging parents and carers to take advantage of the wide range of school holiday activities available on the North Coast this summer.

"Five exciting holiday programs are running on the North Coast next January," Mr Greene said.

"There is a wide range of activities that cater for kids or families with different interests.

"These programs are a fantastic opportunity for kids to become more active, learn new skills and make new friends," he said.

Activity Days will be held at Lake Ainsworth Sport and Recreation Centre for boys and girls aged seven to 13. Activities include indoor rock climbing, archery, canoeing, swimming and much more. The cost is $40 per day.

The Surf Program will really appeal to kids who love to be active in the water. The program is for boys and girls aged eight to 15 who are interested in developing their skills while learning about safe surfing, rips and currents. The cost is $120 for two days.

The Bush to Beach Ride is for boys and girls aged ten to sixteen. Participants will learn horse awareness and be given a basic riding lesson followed by an enjoyable trail ride along the beach. The cost is $100.

There is also the opportunity to try some extreme fun with a team of trained adventurers. Go abseiling at the old Island Quarry, explore the area and enjoy activities like raft building and blind man's bluff. This program is for boys and girls aged six to 16 years and costs $50.

Cricket clinics are also being run in Coffs Harbour, Kempsey, Lismore, Port Macquarie and Tweed Heads for boys and girls aged 8 to sixteen. The cost of each clinic is $65.
